WB Govt Downgrades Sourav Ganguly Security Cover: Z Category to Y Category - Full Details [03/06/2026]

Kolkata: West Bengal State Government has downgraded security cover of former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. Security Wing of State Police confirmed this decision on June 3, 2026.

What Changed? Z to Y Category

Earlier Sourav Ganguly was getting 'Z' category security from State Govt. Now it has been downgraded to 'Y' category as per new security protocols and threat assessment review in 2026.

Protection Details: Before vs After

Under 'Z' Category:
1. Security for Behala residence
2. Pilot car or armed escort for commute
3. Full movement protection

Under new 'Y' Category:
1. 3 officers from Special Branch for personal security
2. 3 police personnel for Behala residence guard
3. No pilot car/armed escort during commute

Why This Decision?

Police officials said this is a routine administrative procedure. Decision taken after review of 'Threat Perception' regarding prominent individuals in the state.

Background Context

In 2023, Sourav's security was upgraded from 'Y' to 'Z' category without any personal request from him. Based on new state-level security protocols and 2026 assessment, it has now reverted to previous 'Y' level.

Following a long-standing dispute, the West Bengal government has taken a significant step toward clearing the outstanding Dearness Allowance (DA) dues of state government employees and pensioners. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made an announcement regarding this matter on Sunday afternoon, prior to the declaration of the election schedule in the state. Notably, even before her announcement, the Finance Department had issued several notifications and memoranda on March 13, stating that the DA arrears—accrued between April 2008 and December 2019—would be cleared in a phased manner.
