October 2026 Ration Update: Extra 2 Kg Free Rice for All NFSA Card Holders in India

  Big relief for crores of ration card holders across India. The Central Government has announced that from October 1, 2026, every eligible family under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) will receive an additional 2 kilograms of free rice every month. This decision comes just before the Durga Puja and Diwali festive season. The move aims to provide extra food security to poor and middle-class families during a time when expenses usually increase. Until now, beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) were receiving 5 kg of free food grains per person per month. After this update, the quantity will increase to 7 kg per person per month. For a family of 4, this means 28 kg of free rice and wheat every month instead of 20 kg. Who Will Get This Extra 2 Kg Rice? Citizens who have not yet completed the biometric authentication process now have time till 30th June 2026 to update their details. Officials have indicated that failure to complete e-KYC before the new cut-off date may result in suspension of monthly ration benefits from July 2026 onwards. Why Was the Deadline Extended? The earlier deadline was 31st May 2026. However, reports citing Food Department data show that a significant number of beneficiaries, especially from rural districts like Purulia, Bankura, and Cooch Behar, were unable to finish the process due to network issues and Aadhaar-mobile linking problems.
