RG Kar Case: West Bengal Govt Suspends 3 IPS Officers Over Probe Lapses | Suvendu Adhikari Announces Action


Sanchita chatterjee Kolkata, May  2026 — In a major administrative move, the West Bengal government on Friday suspended three senior IPS officers for alleged lapses in the initial investigation of the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case.


Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the suspension at the state secretariat, stating that the action followed a fact-finding inquiry by the Chief Secretary and Home Secretary.


Suspended IPS Officers

Vineet Goyal – Former Kolkata Police Commissioner  

Indira Mukherjee – Former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Division  

Abhishek Gupta – Former Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Division  


Allegations Against Them

According to the CM, the officers are accused of:

Mishandling the initial probe into the August 9, 2024 incident at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital  

Offering money to the victim’s family as alleged bribe  

Holding an unauthorised press conference without official clearance  


What Happens Next

The CM clarified that the actual criminal investigation is being conducted by the CBI and is under judicial review. The state’s role is limited to the initial response and administrative accountability.  

Departmental proceedings against all three officers will now be led by the State Home Secretary under the Chief Secretary’s supervision.


The RG Kar case, which shook West Bengal last year, was a key issue in the 2026 Assembly elections. This marks the BJP government’s first major disciplinary action since taking charge.
