Delhi To Run Only Electric Autos Soon | Pollution Control Panel's Big Decision 2026 |
New Delhi, May 16, 2026 — Delhi is set to become India’s first city to operate only electric autos as the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) approved a major policy shift to curb air pollution.
The decision comes amid rising concerns over Delhi’s air quality index, which frequently crosses hazardous levels during winter months.
What The New Policy Says
All existing CNG and diesel autos will be phased out gradually and replaced with electric autos.
The transition will be implemented in stages over the next 18-24 months.
New permits for autos will only be issued for electric vehicles going forward.
Why This Move Matters
Delhi contributes nearly 20-25% of vehicular emissions from its auto fleet. Officials say switching to electric autos can cut PM 2.5 and CO2 emissions significantly, improving public health and reducing Delhi’s carbon footprint.
The government will also roll out charging infrastructure expansion across all 11 districts to support the transition. Subsidies and financial incentives for auto drivers are expected to be announced soon.
Driver’s Concern & Government Response
Auto driver unions have raised concerns about the cost of new electric autos and charging downtime. The DPCC said it is working with the Transport Department to provide low-interest loans and battery swapping stations to ease the shift.
This move aligns with Delhi’s broader EV Policy 2.0, which aims for 25% of all new vehicle registrations to be electric by 2027.
