Reported by SANCHITA CHATTERJEE | Kolkata, 8 June 2026Kolkata witnessed a massive push for fitness and cycling culture as the city celebrated World Bicycle Day 2026 with the ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ initiative. The mega event, held at the iconic Maidan area, drew thousands of participants and saw major policy announcements aimed at transforming West Bengal into a sporting power house. The programme was spearheaded by Shri Nisith Pramanik, Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of West Bengal. He was accompanied by a high-profile panel including Dr. Sharadwat Mukherjee, Cabinet Minister; Shri Ashok Dinda, State Minister and former Indian pacer; and Shri Kalyan Chaubey, President of the All India Football Federation (AIFF). Key administrative officials present on the dais were Shri Shivananda Mishra, Regional Director of SAI’s Netaji Subhas Eastern Centre, and Shri Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary, Department of Youth Services and Sports, Government of West Bengal. The event also saw participation from Shri Dinesh Chandra Mandal, Special Secretary of Youth Services and Sports, and Shri Ajay Nanda, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata. Adding star power to the fitness drive were Olympians Soma Biswas and Bombayla Devi Laishram, who cycled alongside school students and NCC cadets, inspiring young athletes. What is ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’?
Originally launched in December 2024 by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ has now grown into a pan-India public health movement. The core idea is simple but powerful: dedicate Sunday mornings to cycling to build a habit of fitness, reduce lifestyle diseases, and promote eco-friendly transport. In the last 18 months, the initiative has touched over 3 million citizens across 750+ districts, making it one of the largest community fitness drives in the world.More Than Just Cycling: A Full Fitness Carnival
The Kolkata edition was not limited to a bicycle rally. The venue turned into a vibrant sports carnival. After the 5-km cycle ride from Maidan to Victoria Memorial and back, participants joined multiple activity zones. These included live yoga sessions, rope skipping challenges, high-energy Zumba, dart competitions, and even nostalgic games like Snakes & Ladders and Ludo. Special “fitness challenge corners” saw youth competing in push-ups, spot jumping, and plank holds, with SAI coaches recording timings.Addressing the gathering of over 4,000 people, Minister Nisith Pramanik stressed the link between daily fitness and India’s Olympic dream. "The Hon’ble Prime Minister’s call for a ‘Fit India’ is not just a slogan. Cycling should be our first prescription for health, before we need a doctor. Just 30 minutes of cycling every day can prevent diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. Events like this will build the foundation for our mission to host the Olympic Games in 2036. I thank every citizen who joined today for this noble cause," he said.Game-Changing Announcements for West Bengal Athletes
The biggest highlight was a set of new incentives for sportspersons from West Bengal. Shri Pramanik announced a massive hike in cash awards for international medal winners from the state: Olympic/World Championship Gold: ₹8 crore Silver: ₹7 crore Bronze: ₹6 crore This is one of the highest state-level awards in India. Additionally, he declared that eligible medal-winning athletes will be directly recruited into government jobs based on educational qualifications, with the top post being equivalent to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). The move aims to provide financial security to athletes and attract more youth to professional sports.“West Bengal Will Lead India’s Sports Revolution”
Speaking at the event, Cabinet Minister Dr. Sharadwat Mukherjee said, "We are fully committed to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of a healthy India. No government before has launched mass movements like ‘Fit India’ and ‘Khelo India’. Because of these initiatives, fitness is now a festival in every home. I am confident that West Bengal, with its talent and passion, will soon be counted among the top 3 sports states in India."Massive Participation from Forces and Students
The event was a true example of ‘Jan Bhagidari’. It was jointly organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India, and Cycling Federation of India. Over 250 NCC cadets led the rally discipline. They were joined by contingents from NSS, BSF, CISF, Indian Army, CRPF, West Bengal Police, and more than 30 schools from Kolkata, Howrah, and North 24 Parganas. To make fitness a national habit, the ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ was conducted simultaneously across all states and UTs. SAI’s Regional Centres, National Centres of Excellence, SAI Training Centres, Khelo India State Centres of Excellence, and Khelo India Centres all hosted parallel rides at 7 AM, creating a synchronised wave of cycling across India. Why This Matters for Bengal
West Bengal has a deep cycling culture, especially in districts like Howrah, Nadia, and East Midnapore where cycles are still the main mode of transport for milkmen, office-goers, and students. However, Kolkata’s roads have become car-centric. Initiatives like this, backed by policy and prize money, can revive cycling as safe, aspirational, and cool among urban youth. With the state government now linking fitness to jobs and Olympic dreams, the humble bicycle may well become Bengal’s new symbol of health and ambition.
