Preparations are currently underway at the Brigade Parade Ground for the swearing-in ceremony of the potential ministers of West Bengal's first BJP government, scheduled for Saturday. Just prior to this, the fatal shooting of Chandranath Rath—the personal assistant to Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari—in Madhyamgram has sent shockwaves through state politics. As the investigation progresses, it is becoming increasingly evident that this attack was highly premeditated and executed in a professional manner. Consequently, a major question has now emerged at the very center of the police investigation: Who hired these professional killers?

The ‘Operation’ Concluded in Just 50 Seconds

According to police sources, the entire attack unfolded within a mere 50 seconds. After analyzing CCTV footage, investigators determined that the assailants first executed a planned maneuver to block the road, thereby forcing Chandranath Rath's Scorpio SUV to come to a halt. Subsequently, several attackers swarmed the vehicle in an instant and opened fire in rapid succession. As soon as the attack concluded, they swiftly fled the scene on motorcycles. In the opinion of the investigators, executing such a complex operation with such precision in such a short timeframe could not possibly be the work of ordinary criminals. The police suspect that trained contract killers—including at least one sharpshooter—were involved in this attack.

Pinpoint Accuracy, Even Through Tinted Windows

The windows of the Scorpio SUV in which Chandranath Rath was traveling were covered with dark tint film. Consequently, it should not have been possible to clearly discern from the outside who was seated where inside the vehicle. Yet, the attackers fired directly at the specific side where Chandranath was seated in the front passenger seat. The investigation has revealed that approximately ten rounds were fired. Of these, multiple bullets struck Chandranath Rath in the chest. According to police and forensic experts, at least three bullets pierced through his chest, causing severe damage to his heart. Investigators assert that the manner in which the shots were fired—and the precision with which the target was selected—makes it abundantly clear that the attackers had a singular objective: to ensure the certain death of Chandranath Rath.

Was a ‘Reconnaissance’ Mission Conducted in Advance?  Following the incident, Suvendu Adhikari alleged that reconnaissance had been conducted for several days prior to the attack. He claims that his personal assistant was murdered in a premeditated manner, executed by contract killers. The police are now taking this theory seriously and investigating it with due diligence. Investigators suspect that information regarding Chandranath Rath's daily commute—including his return times, the routes he took, and his specific seating position within the vehicle—had been gathered in advance. This suspicion stems from the fact that the shots were fired with precision, targeting the exact spot where Chandranath himself was seated. Investigators believe that this attack was not the result of a spur-of-the-moment decision; rather, it was a meticulously planned operation involving prior strategizing, careful timing, and the precise identification of the target.

**Chandranath, Not the Driver, Was the Primary Target**

At the time of the incident, two other individuals were present in the vehicle: the primary driver and a backup driver, who was seated in the middle row. The primary driver also sustained injuries from the gunfire. However, investigators maintain that the driver was not the intended target. According to police sources, the shots were fired through the front left-side window—the very spot where Chandranath Rath was seated. Based on the trajectory of the bullets, the nature of the injuries, and the single bullet hole found in the glass, investigators are nearly certain that the assailants were specifically targeting a particular individual. A section of former police officials suggests that firing with such precision through the tinted windows of a vehicle is an feat achievable only by a highly skilled marksman.

**On Whose Orders Were the Contract Killers Hired?**

At this juncture, the most critical question facing the police investigation is: who hired these professional killers? Investigators are currently scrutinizing various aspects of Chandranath Rath's recent activities, his political affiliations, whether he had received any threats, and who might have possessed knowledge of his daily routine. CCTV footage is being collected and analyzed to map out the escape route taken by the assailants. Additionally, data from mobile towers in the vicinity is being examined. Investigators are seeking to determine whether any suspicious motorcycles or vehicles were loitering in the area prior to the attack.

According to police sources, investigators are also looking into the possibility that the assailants may have received assistance from local accomplices.  Investigators believe that without precise information regarding Chandranath's daily routine, it would not have been possible to execute such a meticulously planned attack.

**Political Tensions Run High**

Political bickering has been rife ever since the incident occurred. The BJP leadership has alleged that this was a premeditated political assassination. Shamik Bhattacharya has raised the question: why was a former army serviceman—an ostensibly apolitical figure—shot dead at point-blank range in such a manner? State BJP chief spokesperson Debjit Sarkar asserts that every necessary step is being taken at every level to apprehend the perpetrators. He maintains that the involvement of the Trinamool Congress in this affair is evident, and this link will ultimately be uncovered.

On the other hand, the police have not yet publicly named any specific individual in connection with this murder. Investigators suggest that, judging by the nature of the attack, there is a strong probability that professional contract killers were involved. However, the answers to the crucial questions—at whose behest and for what motive this operation was carried out—remain elusive.
