Suvendu Adhikari set a historic precedent today, May 9, 2026, by taking the oath of office at Kolkata's Brigade Parade Ground as West Bengal's first BJP Chief Minister.




 Sanchita chatterjee kolkata : Suvendu Adhikari took the oath today, May 9, 2026, at Kolkata's Brigade Parade Ground, becoming West Bengal's first BJP Chief Minister.

Selection of the Chief Minister: Yesterday, May 8, 2026, during a meeting of the newly elected BJP legislators, Suvendu Adhikari was unanimously elected as the leader of the legislative party.



The swearing-in ceremony took place today between 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM. Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath of office to him. Alongside Suvendu Adhikari, five other individuals also took the oath as ministers.

The ceremony was attended by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Chief Ministers from various BJP-ruled states across the country.





In the 2026 Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a single-party majority by winning 207 seats, thereby bringing an end to the Trinamool Congress's 15-year rule.

The new BJP government has decided to govern the state not from Nabanna, but from Kolkata's historic Mahakaran (Writers' Buildings).


The new Chief Minister's office has been prepared within the VVIP block on the third floor of Mahakaran. However, until the complete renovation work is finished, the Chief Minister will temporarily conduct official business from the Assembly premises as well.

Following a long-standing dispute, the West Bengal government has taken a significant step toward clearing the outstanding Dearness Allowance (DA) dues of state government employees and pensioners. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made an announcement regarding this matter on Sunday afternoon, prior to the declaration of the election schedule in the state.
