  Sanchita chatterjee Kolkata: Makhan Lal Sarkar is a veteran and distinguished leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal. He served as the very first District President of the BJP's Siliguri Organizational District.

A key highlight of his political career—and a testament to his role as a close associate of Syama Prasad—is that he was one of the companions on the historic Kashmir journey undertaken by the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, *Bharat Kesari* Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee.


He played a pivotal role in strengthening the party's foundational organizational base in North Bengal.

In May 2026, at the swearing-in ceremony of Suvendu Adhikari held in Kolkata (specifically at the Brigade Parade Ground), India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respects to this 97-year-old veteran public leader by touching his feet in reverence and embracing him.

Following a long-standing dispute, the West Bengal government has taken a significant step toward clearing the outstanding Dearness Allowance (DA) dues of state government employees and pensioners. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made an announcement regarding this matter on Sunday afternoon, prior to the declaration of the election schedule in the state.
