Fraudsters withdraw money from thousands of people in fake Annapurna scheme
Odisha, May 18, 2026
A major fraud has come to light in Odisha in the name of BJP's promised 'Annapurna Yojana'. According to local sources, for the last three months, camps were set up in villages in the name of giving 'Annapurna cards' and collecting Aadhaar cards, bank passbooks and registration fees of Rs 500 from the common people.
How the fraud was going on:
Fake forms: Forms with the government logo and the Chief Minister's picture were distributed and it was said that 10 kg of rice, 2 kg of pulses and Rs 1000 would be directly credited to the account per month.
WhatsApp campaign: PDFs of fake government orders were distributed with the message 'Get your name on the Annapurna list, the last date is May 20'.
Money withdrawal: The gang has withdrawn an estimated Rs 40 lakh from at least 8,000 families in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Baleshwar districts.
Keonjhar's Sundari Mahato said, "They said they would give rice from the 15th. Now the phone is switched off."
The district administration said that no new central or state scheme called 'Annapurna' has been launched. The whole thing is fake. Odisha Police has filed an FIR with the cyber crime branch and has requested the general public not to share Aadhaar-OTP with anyone.
