May 11, 2026, will go down in the history of West Bengal. For the first time since independence, Suvendu Adhikari—serving as the Chief Minister of a BJP government—stepped into the Nabanna conference hall today and presided over his first cabinet meeting.

**6 Major Cabinet Decisions**

During the one-and-a-half-hour meeting, which began at 1:00 PM, the new government took six significant decisions:

**Launch of Ayushman Bharat**

From now on, West Bengal comes under the ambit of the Centre's Ayushman Bharat health scheme. As a result, approximately 20 million people in the state will receive free medical treatment worth up to ₹5 lakh annually.

**Border Fencing – Land for BSF**

Approval was granted for the transfer of land to the Border Security Force (BSF) within 45 days to facilitate the erection of a 569-kilometer barbed-wire fence along the Bangladesh border.

**Government Support for Families of Political Violence Victims**

A decision was taken to provide government jobs and financial assistance to the families of 321 BJP workers who lost their lives in incidents of political violence over the last 15 years.

**Implementation of New Criminal Laws**

The Centre's new criminal justice codes—the *Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita*, *Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita*, and *Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam*—will now be implemented within the state.

**Census 2025 to Begin**

The central census exercise, which had been halted by the previous government, will now be resumed.

**Increase in Age Limit for Government Jobs**

The upper age limit for applying to government jobs has been increased by two years.

**Administrative Review Meeting**

Following the cabinet meeting, at 4:00 PM, Suvendu Adhikari held a law-and-order review meeting at the Nabanna conference hall with all the District Magistrates, Superintendents of Police, the DGP, and officers from the CID and STF.

The backdrop for this meeting was the murder of Suvendu's personal assistant, Chandranath Rath, on May 6. Consequently, security at Nabanna was upgraded to a three-tier system today. Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand and Howrah Police Commissioner Akhilesh Chaturvedi had visited Nabanna on Sunday itself to inspect and review the security arrangements.  **Portfolio Allocation**

Portfolios were also allocated today to the five ministers who took their oaths on May 9. However, the specific departments assigned to each minister have not yet been officially disclosed.

**Suvendu's Message**

Following the meeting, Suvendu Adhikari stated, "A new era begins at Nabanna starting today. This is no longer the government of any single political party; it is the government of West Bengal. Our mission is to restore Bengal's lost glory—across all spheres: culture, education, law and order, and the economy."

BJP State President Samik Bhattacharya announced that, for the time being, the government will continue to function from Nabanna. Operations will shift back to the Writers' Building once its renovation is complete.
