Historic Verdict Shocks Nation: 9 Police Get Death Penalty

In a landmark judgment, a court in Madurai has sentenced nine police personnel to death in the shocking Sathankulam custodial deaths case

The victims — a father and son — died after brutal torture in police custody during the 2020 lockdown. The court called it a “rarest of rare” case, highlighting abuse of power and inhuman violence.

The officers have also been ordered to pay ₹1.40 crore compensation to the victim’s family.

This verdict is being seen as a strong message against custodial violence and misuse of authority in India.

Final confirmation of the death penalty will be reviewed by the High Court.
