ReportedbySanchitachatterjee: (May 1, 2026) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has remained at the site until late into the night to personally oversee the security of the election strong rooms. She continues to sit at the counting center for her own constituency—Bhabanipur—located at the Shakhawat Memorial School, even past midnight.
Fearing potential tampering with EVMs and postal ballots, leaders and workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) began staging sit-in protests outside various strong rooms across Kolkata on Thursday evening. Mamata Banerjee herself joined these protests and instructed party workers to keep a night-long vigil guarding the strong rooms.
Intense tension has primarily flared up around the Shakhawat Memorial School (Bhabanipur constituency) in South Kolkata, as well as the Netaji Indoor Stadium and the Khudiram Anushilan Kendra in North Kolkata.
The Trinamool Congress alleges that attempts were made to open the strong rooms without any prior notice, and that at the time, none of their representatives were permitted to enter the premises.
Alongside Mamata Banerjee, Kunal Ghosh and Shashi Panja have also joined this sit-in protest.
Currently, a massive contingent of both state police and central forces has been deployed outside the strong rooms.
