Advanced Spine Surgeries at Manipal Hospital Mukundapur Restore Movement, Independence and Hope for Patients Through Precision Care
Reported by Sanchita chatterjee Kolkata, June 9, 2026: As spinal ailments continue to impact millions globally,
they have emerged as one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, often
silently taking away mobility, independence, and quality of life. According to
the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 619 million people were living
with low back pain in 2020, a figure projected to rise to over 840 million by
2050. With spinal disorders increasingly affecting individuals across age
groups due to sedentary lifestyles, poor posture, obesity, and ageing
populations, the need for advanced treatment options that not only treat
disease but restore dignity and daily living has become more critical than
ever.
To highlight the evolving landscape of spine care, Dr.
Anindya Basu, Clinical Lead & Senior Consultant – Spine Surgery; Dr.
Pratyush Shahi, Associate Consultant – Spine Surgery; and Dr. Sourabh
Ghosh, Specialist Surgeon, from Manipal Hospital Mukundapur hosted a
programme titled “Precision at the Core,” attended by 10 patients who
successfully recovered after spine treatment. The session showcased how modern
surgical innovations are transforming the management of complex spinal
conditions through safer, more precise, and minimally invasive approaches.
During the session, doctors shared that, The Department of
Spine Surgery at Manipal Hospitals Mukundapur is equipped with state-of-the-art
O-Arm® 3D Imaging and Navigation Technology, which is enabling them to
perform complex spinal procedures with unprecedented accuracy. The O-Arm
provides real-time three-dimensional imaging during surgery, allowing precise
placement of spinal implants and instrumentation while minimizing the risk of
complications. This technology is particularly beneficial in deformity correction
surgeries, revision spine procedures, trauma cases, and complex spinal
reconstructions as well as minimally invasive spinal Fusions.
The hospital is also at the forefront of Endoscopic Spine
Surgery, one of the most advanced forms of minimally invasive spine surgery
available today. The Spine Surgery team has the maximum experience of
endoscopic spine surgeries in the region. Through tiny incisions and
specialized endoscopic equipment, surgeons can treat conditions such as slipped
discs, spinal stenosis, and nerve compression while causing minimal disruption
to surrounding tissues. Patients often experience reduced post-operative pain,
shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, and quicker return to daily
activities.
A major strength of the spine programme is its expertise in Scoliosis
and Complex Spinal Deformity Correction Surgery. Utilizing modern surgical
planning, advanced neuromonitoring, 3D navigation, and evidence-based
correction techniques, the team manages both paediatric and adult spinal
deformities with a focus on safety and long-term functional outcomes.
Patients from across Eastern India and neighboring countries increasingly seek
treatment at the center for complex scoliosis, kyphosis, and revision deformity
surgeries.
Beyond surgery, the hospital provides Comprehensive Spine
Care, encompassing conservative treatment, pain management, physiotherapy,
rehabilitation, spinal injections, minimally invasive procedures, trauma care,
deformity correction, tumour surgery, infection management, and advanced
reconstructive spinal surgery. A multidisciplinary team of spine surgeons,
neurologists, neurosurgeons, pain specialists, physiotherapists, and
rehabilitation experts works together to provide personalized treatment plans
tailored to each patient’s needs.
Speaking on the advancements in spine care,
Dr. Anindya Basu, Clinical
Lead & Senior Consultant – Spine Surgery,
Manipal Hospitals Mukundapur, said, “Modern spine surgery has evolved dramatically over the past decade. Technologies such as O-Arm
navigation and endoscopic spine surgery allow us to perform increasingly
complex procedures with greater precision and predictability. Our goal is to
provide every patient with the most appropriate treatment, from conservative
care to advanced reconstructive surgery, while ensuring the highest standards
of safety and clinical excellence.”
During the programme, one of the patients, Ashok Kumar
Karmakar, 67-year-old, a resident of Narendrapur, shared his emotional
journey and stated, “For 5–6 months, I lived with unbearable pain in my legs.
Even simple walking became a struggle, and nothing seemed to help. After
meeting Dr. Anindya Basu at Manipal Hospital Mukundapur, I was diagnosed with
L3–L4 disc dislocation and advised surgery. I was admitted on 4th May and
operated on 5th May. What surprised me
most was that I felt no pain during the procedure, I even
asked when I would be taken to the OT, only to be told it was already done.
When I opened my eyes and realised the surgery was over, I felt a sense of
relief I cannot describe. Today, I can walk freely again and even do small
things like making tea for my family. I feel I have got my life back.” Adding
to this, his wife shared, “When he woke up after surgery and asked when
he would be taken to the OT, we realised how smooth and painless the entire procedure
had been. We had gone through months of worry but seeing him stand again gave
us immense relief and gratitude.”
Sharing another recovery journey, Pratik Chatterjee, 30-year-old,
from Haripal, Hooghly said, “For nearly a year, I was living with constant
pain that spread from my back to my legs. I could barely move, and even holding
my daughter in my arms became impossible. After MRI reports showed disc bulging
at L2–L4, I consulted Dr. Anindya Basu, who guided me with patience and
confidence. Today, I am recovering well and slowly regaining strength. The
biggest joy for me is knowing that in a few months, I will finally be able to
lift my daughter again. That thought gives me hope every day.”
Another patient, Tapan Kumar De, a 65-year-old, Retired
Govt. of Meghalaya Employee, from Haltu shared,
“The pain in my legs had become so severe that even sleep was impossible. I
felt my independence slowly slipping away. After consulting at Manipal Hospital
Mukundapur, I underwent surgery on 5th May and was made to walk the same
evening. By the next day, I was moving around the hospital. Today, I am back to
my normal routine, walking, travelling, and living without fear of pain. I am
deeply grateful for giving me my life back.”
By bringing together specialists and recovered patients on a
common platform, the programme highlighted how advancements in minimally
invasive and endoscopic spine surgery are not just improving clinical outcomes,
but are quietly restoring lives, mobility, and hope. The initiative reflected
Manipal Hospitals Mukundapur’s continued commitment to combining clinical
excellence, advanced technology, and compassionate care—helping patients not
just recover, but truly live again.
