Robotic Summit 2026 Held in Kolkata Highlights Growth of AI in Healthcare

Reported by Sanchita chatterjee Kolkata, May 12, 2026 — Manipal Hospitals East hosted Robotic Summit 2026 on National Technology Day, focusing on the role of robotic-assisted technology in modern healthcare in Eastern India.

The event brought together medical experts, researchers, and patients who have undergone robotic procedures to discuss advancements in precision-driven surgical care.

Key Data Presented at the Summit
According to the hospital group, more than 3000 robotic surgeries have been performed across its Kolkata facilities. The network currently operates five robotic systems and has a team of over 30 robotic surgeons working across 10 medical specialties including cardiac surgery, oncology, orthopaedics, and urology.

A notable figure shared was 1500+ robotic knee replacement surgeries performed at Manipal Hospital EM Bypass within the last two years.

New Initiatives Announced
Two new initiatives were announced during the summit:
Robotic Doctor Badges — introduced to identify specialists trained in robotic surgical procedures.
Robotic Workshop June 2026 — a planned event for medical professionals and media to explore clinical applications and technological developments in robotic surgery.

Expert Commentary
Dr. Sushmita Mitra, former Head of the Machine Intelligence Unit at Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata, spoke as Chief Guest. She noted that the integration of AI, machine learning, and robotics is reshaping surgical precision and patient care models in India.

Dr. Kunal Sarkar from the cardiovascular department said robotic systems are enabling minimally invasive cardiac procedures with smaller incisions and shorter recovery times.

Dr. Sourav Datta from the oncology department stated that robotic technology is being increasingly used for complex tumor surgeries across gastrointestinal, thoracic, and gynaecological cases.

Dr. Vikash Kapoor from orthopaedics highlighted improvements in joint replacement outcomes, including better implant alignment and faster rehabilitation.

Context: Robotic Surgery in India
Robotic-assisted surgery has grown steadily in India over the last five years, particularly in metro cities. The technology allows for smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, and potentially faster recovery compared to conventional open surgery. However, the cost remains a factor for many patients.

With the Ayushman Bharat Scheme 2026 expanding coverage to include select robotic procedures, access in Eastern India is expected to improve.
