One Scan Can Save a Life
Reported  by sanchita chatterjee : Manipal Hospitals, Kolkata has taken a major step forward in emergency healthcare with the launch of its innovative initiative, “One Scan Can Save a Life”. The program was officially unveiled yesterday in Kolkata and aims to make emergency medical response faster, smarter, and more efficient during life-threatening situations.

The launch event was graced by acclaimed Tollywood filmmaker duo Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukhopadhyay. They were joined by Dr. Ayanabh Debgupta, Regional Director, Manipal Hospitals East, along with senior clinicians and emergency medicine specialists from the hospital.

What is “One Scan Can Save a Life”?

It is a QR code-based emergency response system designed to bridge the critical information gap that often occurs during medical emergencies. Under this initiative, every patient can opt for a unique QR code linked to their essential medical data. This includes blood group, known allergies, chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension, current medications, and emergency contact details.

In a crisis, when a patient is unconscious or unable to communicate, any first responder or ER doctor can scan the QR code from the patient’s phone, health card, keychain, or helmet sticker. Within seconds, the patient’s critical medical snapshot appears on the medical team’s device. This helps doctors make informed decisions instantly during the ‘golden hour’ – the most crucial period after a trauma or medical event.

Transforming  Emergency

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Ayanabh Debgupta said, “In an emergency, every second counts. Often, patients arrive alone and are unable to share their history. We spend 10-15 precious minutes trying to find out if they are diabetic, if they’re on blood thinners, or if they have a drug allergy. This QR scan gives us that information instantly. In emergency medicine, 10 minutes can be the difference between life and death.”

Why Kolkata Needs This Initiative

Kolkata and Eastern India are witnessing a steady rise in cases of road accidents, strokes, and cardiac arrests. Heavy traffic often delays ambulances, and once at the hospital, more time is lost in tracing old prescriptions or waiting for a relative to arrive. Manipal Hospitals’ new system directly addresses this ‘information delay’. By making patient data available at the point of care, it significantly improves the chances of a positive outcome.

Filmmaker Shiboprosad Mukhopadhyay shared his thoughts, saying, “In films, we tell stories of hope and survival. But in real life, saving a life is the greatest story of all. If technology can help doctors do that, then it is the best use of innovation. I wholeheartedly support this initiative and hope it becomes a model for others.” Nandita Roy added that she hopes more hospitals adopt such patient-centric technology for the larger good of society.

How the System Works

During registration at any Manipal Hospitals facility, patients can enroll for a secure QR profile. The QR code can then be kept as a phone wallpaper, printed on a health card, or used as a sticker on a helmet or car dashboard. All data is stored on HIPAA-compliant, encrypted servers to ensure complete privacy and security.

The hospital management announced that in the first phase, they aim to bring over 10,000 patients under this service. Future plans include collaborations with schools, corporate offices, and senior citizen forums to expand the initiative at a community level.

A Step Forward in Community Healthcare

During a panel discussion, senior clinicians emphasized, “Our philosophy is to treat the patient, not just the disease. This QR system allows us to do that with much greater accuracy. Even if a patient is unconscious, we will know instantly about their medical conditions and avoid potentially fatal errors in treatment.”

The event concluded with a live demonstration where a dummy patient’s QR code was scanned, and their entire medical history appeared on screen in under 30 seconds.

Manipal Hospitals, Kolkata believes the future of healthcare lies in combining technology with human compassion. “One Scan Can Save a Life” is a reflection of that belief. If you or your family are patients at Manipal, do ask about QR enrollment during your next visit. Because a small scan today might just save a life tomorrow.
