Biswajit Poddar alias Sona Pappu has finally been caught by ED in the land corruption case. He suddenly appeared at the ED office at CGO Complex in Salt Lake on Monday morning. After about 9 hours of interrogation, the Enforcement Directorate arrested him late on Monday night. ED sources claim that Sona Pappu did not cooperate at all in the interrogation.

Who is this Sona Pappu?
Biswajit Poddar, a well-known gold businessman from North Kolkata's Barabazar, is nicknamed Sona Pappu. He is also involved in the gold business with his father. But he came to the attention of the central investigation agency in a case of land corruption and financial embezzlement. The ED suspects that Sona Pappu is one of the heads of a huge ring of illegal land buying and selling and extortion in Kolkata and adjacent areas. The names of Kolkata Police DC Shantanu Sinha Biswas and businessman Joy S Kamdar are also involved in this ring.

Months after months of 'returning', then sudden appearance
Joy Kamdar and DC Shantanu Sinha Biswas have already been arrested in this case. But the ED could not find Sona Pappu at all. The central agency has searched his house and various addresses multiple times. In early April, raids were also conducted simultaneously at several places in Kolkata. But every time he escaped the ED's hands. He was listed as a 'returning' in the ED's records.

In the meantime, Sona Pappu claimed his innocence through a Facebook live. His statement was that he was being framed. But despite being summoned, he did not appear at the ED office even once.

That same Sona Pappu suddenly reached the ED office on Monday morning. In response to questions from reporters, he said, "I did not run away anywhere. I was at home. I was called, so I came for a meeting. I do not accept the theory of disappearance."

What did he say during interrogation?

According to ED sources, Sona Pappu could not answer several questions during the 9-hour marathon interrogation. What is his role in the land corruption ring, what is his relationship with Joy Kamdar and Shantanu Sinha, what is the source of the transactions worth crores of rupees - he avoided answering all these questions. The ED claims that he did not cooperate in the investigation. He was arrested at night.

However, Sona Pappu claimed innocence in front of reporters. According to him, "I or my father are gold traders. I am not involved in any extortion. I have never been involved in any illegal financial transactions. I know Joy S Kamdar, but I have no business relationship with him."

What are the ED's allegations?
According to central intelligence sources, there are basically three charges against Sona Pappu:
Financial fraud: anonymously buying huge properties and laundering black money.
Extortion: forcibly acquiring land and extorting money from promoters by joining hands with land mafia.
Corruption ring: Shantanu Sinha Biswas, along with Joy Kamdar, is running a huge network of land corruption in Kolkata.

ED estimates that this ring is not only spread in Kolkata but also in different districts of the state. ED wants to interrogate Sona Pappu face to face with the rest by taking him into custody. Investigators believe that this will help them get to the root of this corruption.

Sona Pappu will be produced before the Bankshall Court on Tuesday. ED will apply for his custody.
