Darkness in an Instant, Followed by Relief: Kolkata—Including Newtown—Soaked by Torrential Rain

The sky darkened with clouds, making everything dark in an instant. Then came relief in the torrential rain.

Kolkata: The sky turned pitch black as clouds gathered, plunging everything into darkness in the blink of an eye. It felt as though the Earth, having endured such intense heat, was finally poised to find its calm. And so it did. After the exhausting struggle against the stifling heat, torrential rain finally descended upon the metropolis of Kolkata and its adjoining areas.

The daily life of the city's residents had been thrown into disarray by the unbearable heatwave of the past few days. The mercury had been hovering between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius—leaving residents everywhere gasping for relief from the heat.

But nature follows its own distinct rhythm. Around 4:00 PM on Thursday, the scene shifted abruptly. The skies over the Newtown Bus Stand, as well as Action Areas 1, 2, and 3, became shrouded in dense, black clouds. The darkness of evening descended while it was still broad daylight. Gusty winds swept in, accompanied by the rumble of thunder. Plunging everything into darkness in an instant, nature seemed to signal that the time for tranquility had finally arrived.

Around 6:00 PM, torrential rain lashed down upon the heart of Newtown. Local residents report that the heavy downpour continued uninterrupted for nearly 45 minutes. Relief-bringing rain also fell in front of Eco Park, along Biswa Bangla Sarani, and across key areas of Kolkata such as Shyambazar, Garia, Behala, and Jadavpur. Meanwhile, the Alipore Meteorological Department reports...

Soumya Das, a software engineer and resident of Newtown, remarked, "When I looked out my office window this afternoon and saw everything go dark in an instant, I knew something was about to happen. This rain feels like it has breathed new life into everything." Indeed, just as the Earth had heated up to an extreme degree, this rain seemed to soothe and calm the land in equal measure. Following the downpour, the temperature plummeted sharply, dropping to 31 degrees Celsius. Many people stood out on the streets, letting themselves get soaked in the rain. Even those carrying umbrellas chose to let themselves get wet on purpose, simply to savor the relief after such a prolonged spell of heat.  The Director of the Alipore Meteorological Department stated, "This rainfall is a result of the low-pressure trough that has formed over the Bay of Bengal. There is a possibility of further scattered showers over the next 24 hours. For the time being, there is no risk of a heatwave." According to NKDA sources, pumps had been kept operational in advance to tackle potential waterlogging issues in New Town; consequently, no major disruptions occurred.

Following a prolonged period of intense scorching heat, this torrential downpour has descended like a blessing upon the entire city. Shaking off the stifling heat, both Kolkata and New Town are now being drenched in the relief of this rain. The darkening clouds have, at long last, arrived bearing a message of peace.
