Reported by Sanchita chatterjee: The Aam Aadmi Party today (April 2) wrote to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, demanding the removal of MP Raghav Chadha from the post of Deputy Leader of the party in the Upper House and recommending MP Ashok Mittal as his successor.
This development unfolds against the backdrop of a growing rift between the AAP leadership and Chadha, who has been accused of skipping key party events and meetings in recent months.
Although AAP sources stated that there was "no specific reason" behind this decision and that no allegations of "anti-party activities" against Chadha had been substantiated, they confirmed that the party had been waiting for the opportune moment to take this step.
Internal sources further revealed that Chadha had been absent during moments deemed "critical" from the party's perspective—including the show of strength organized by the AAP in late February following the discharge of leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia in the excise policy case—and that he had "gradually drifted further away" from the party and its top leadership.
According to party sources, it became evident that a storm was brewing when Chadha—who has served in the Rajya Sabha since 2022 and has two years remaining in his tenure—was conspicuously omitted from the party's list of star campaigners for the ongoing assembly elections across five states and one Union Territory.
Party sources indicated that, in the interest of preventing Chadha from attaining "martyr status" in the future, there is little likelihood of him being formally expelled from the party; instead, he will be permitted to continue serving as one of the party's ten Rajya Sabha MPs for "as long as he wishes."
