Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided the house of businessman Biswajit Poddar alias Sona Pappu in Ballygunge, South Kolkata

The central investigation agency is active in the state again ahead of the assembly elections. On Wednesday morning, officials of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided the house of businessman Biswajit Poddar alias Sona Pappu in Ballygunge, South Kolkata. Not only Sona Pappu's house, search operations are underway at several other places in the city on Wednesday. One of them is an office on Ashwini Dutta Road. Initially, according to ED sources, the raid is being conducted at the houses and offices of various construction companies and those associated with those companies in connection with the investigation into allegations of illegal transactions worth crores of rupees.

According to investigators, there have been allegations of transactions worth crores of rupees against the construction company. Sona Pappu's name has also been implicated in those transactions. This raid is based on that. It is being investigated whether the money is somehow going into the hands of 'influential people'.

Sona Pappu has always been known to be close to the Trinamool Congress. His name was also involved in a clash at Rabindra Sarovar recently.  Incidentally, the outgoing MLA and Trinamool candidate from Ballygunge, the area where Sona Pappu lives, Debashis Kumar, was also summoned by the ED a couple of days ago for investigation in another case. This time, the search operation was conducted at Sona Pappu's house.

Sona Pappu's lawyer claims that this search operation is politically motivated. He said, "I heard about this incident from my client's wife. Both of them were not at home. When I came, my client's wife came to the house. My client is associated with a political party. That is why he is being harassed repeatedly in this way. There is no case against my client related to any land issue. I don't know why the search operation is being conducted in this way. The ED has not said anything clearly yet. If they tell us, we will respond in our own way."
