Rebuilding Lives: Improving Trauma Care in India through Prevention, Timely Intervention and Improved Treatment
Reported by Sanchita chatterjee Kolkata, April 17, 2026 : Experts highlight the growing burden of road accidents and osteoporosis-related fractures; call for greater awareness, rapid response and improved access to treatment.
With trauma emerging as a leading cause of death and disability in India, healthcare experts today stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to trauma care that combines prevention, early intervention and improved treatment.
Speaking at a press conference titled “Rebuilding Lives: Advancing Trauma Care in India”, leading doctors and industry representatives highlighted the double burden of road accidents and osteoporosis-related fractures, which together account for a significant proportion of trauma cases across the country.
Road accidents in India are on the rise, particularly affecting the young and economically active population. These incidents often result in serious injuries such as long bone fractures, pelvic trauma and multi-system complications.
Dr. Rakesh Rajput said: “Proper intervention during the golden hour (the crucial period after an injury) can make the difference between life and death or permanent disability and full recovery. Strengthening emergency response systems and raising awareness about road safety are crucial steps to reduce this burden.”
In addition to high-energy trauma, experts highlight the increasing incidence of fractures, especially in the elderly population.
These fractures, which occur due to minor falls, are often associated with osteoporosis and can lead to long-term disability and loss of independence if not managed effectively.
Dr. Rajesh Kushwaha added, “Osteoporosis is often undiagnosed. Early screening, lifestyle changes and timely treatment can significantly reduce the risk of fractures and improve quality of life.”
Over the past decade, trauma care in India has witnessed significant advances in surgical techniques, implant technology, and minimally invasive procedures—ensuring faster recovery and improved patient outcomes.
There has also been an emphasis on continuous training of surgeons and standardization of treatments, which play a critical role in ensuring consistent and high-quality care across healthcare facilities.
Effectively addressing trauma requires collaboration between healthcare providers, industry, policymakers, and the community.
The experts concluded the discussion by calling on all stakeholders to prioritize trauma as a public health agenda.
The panel noted that, “Trauma is not just a medical challenge—it is a societal challenge. By focusing on prevention, timely care, and rehabilitation, we can significantly reduce its impact and help patients return to normal lives.”
