Nagpur, Akola and Amravati are experiencing intense heatwaves


April 2026, a severe heat wave is expected to sweep across large parts of India, with temperatures exceeding 40° Celsius (104° Fahrenheit) at the start of the season, particularly affecting temporary settlements, slums, and urban areas in northern, central, and western India.

Cities like Nagpur, Akola and Amravati are experiencing intense heatwaves .Temperatures in areas like Una and  Nuh have crossed 40-45° Celsius.

Residents of slums and makeshift tent settlements are facing intense heatwaves. Many are being forced to seek shelter in the shade as temperatures in some areas reach nearly 50° Celsius due to high humidity.

The minimum temperature has also increased, resulting in no significant relief at night and some areas are reported to be experiencing night temperatures above 25°C-30°C.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about heatstroke and dehydration, especially for vulnerable populations including pregnant women and children in slum areas. Mitigation measures

Specialized services: Hospitals like RML in Delhi have set up special heat stroke units with ice machines.

Authorities have issued guidelines to limit construction and labor activity during peak hours (12:00 PM to 4:00 PM).

 Schools have been closed or advised to reschedule to avoid the hottest part of the day.Delhi's temperature crossed 40-41 degrees Celsius and high temperature alerts have been issued in areas like Ridge, Safdarjung and Palam.Several cities in Uttar Pradesh, including  Prayagraj, Banda, Varanasi and Kanpur, are seeing temperatures in the range of 40° Celsius to 45° Celsius. Barmier Jaisalmer, Phallodea and Jaipur are witnessing intense heatwaves, where temperatures are regularly crossing 42-45° Celsius.
