Kolkata's old heritage has returned in all its glory.

On 5th June 2026, World Environment Day, Manipal Hospitals proved it once again. A specially curated tram ride from Gariahat Tram Depot brought Kolkata's nostalgia back with a message of sustainability.

Where trams were once just a mode of transport, today that same tram carries the message to save our planet. Heritage and Sustainability - standing together on Kolkata's streets.

I rode Manipal Hospitals' World Environment Day tram from Gariahat to Shyambazar via Esplanade and College Street. Live music, green messages, and Kolkata's nostalgia all in one ride.

Heritage doesn't fade. It gets rewritten.

The sound of the old bell, wooden seats, wind through the windows - everything is still there. Only now, a new green dream has been added.

Inside the tram: Green-white balloons, Earth images, pigeons, and the "REDUCE RECYCLE REUSE" tag. A singer in blue saree performed live with a guitarist, turning the moving tram into a concert hall.

Following a long-standing dispute, the West Bengal government has taken a significant step toward clearing the outstanding Dearness Allowance (DA) dues of state government employees and pensioners. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made an announcement regarding this matter on Sunday afternoon, prior to the declaration of the election schedule in the state. Notably, even before her announcement, the Finance Department had issued several notifications and memoranda on March 13, stating that the DA arrears—accrued between April 2008 and December 2019—would be cleared in a phased manner.
