Bidhannagar in Turmoil Over Extortion: TMC Councillor Samrat Barua Arrested

Bidhannagar, May 24: Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (TMC) Ward 6 TMC Councillor Samrat Barua alias Rakhal was arrested by Baguati Police over allegations of extortion and land grabbing.

Key Points:

• Samrat Barua is known to be a close aide of Mayor-in-Council Debraj Chakraborty.

• He rose from a civic volunteer to become a councillor in the last municipal polls.

• Earlier, councillors of Ward 9, 26, and 34 were also arrested in similar cases.

• BJP MLA Tarunjoyti Tiwari alleged, "Debraj Chakraborty is the real mastermind behind the extortion."

₹100 Crore Asset Controversy: Debraj Chakraborty and his wife, TMC MLA & singer Aditi Munshi, are facing allegations of owning assets worth ₹100 crore. The Calcutta High Court has sought a detailed report by June 19. The state has assured the court that the couple will not be arrested till June 19.

Following a long-standing dispute, the West Bengal government has taken a significant step toward clearing the outstanding Dearness Allowance (DA) dues of state government employees and pensioners. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made an announcement regarding this matter on Sunday afternoon, prior to the declaration of the election schedule in the state.
