Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Netherlands from May 15-17, 2026 as the second leg of his five-nation tour. This is his second official visit to the country after 2017, and it has marked a major turning point in India-Netherlands bilateral ties with the announcement of a Strategic Partnership.
May 15: Arrival & India-EU FTA Push
PM Modi landed in Amsterdam from the UAE on May 15. He was received at the airport by Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen and India’s Ambassador to the Netherlands Kumar Tuhin.
In a social media post, PM Modi said: "The India-EU Free Trade Agreement has given major impetus to trade and investment linkages. This visit offers an opportunity to deepen cooperation in semiconductors, water, clean energy and more."
May 16: Strategic Partnership & Royal Meeting

At Royal Palace Huis ten Bosch, PM Modi met King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima for an official meeting and luncheon. Discussions covered economic cooperation, cultural exchange, and sustainability. In a significant cultural diplomacy move, the Dutch government returned ancient Chola Dynasty copper plates to India.
Later in the day, PM Modi addressed over 2,000 members of the Indian diaspora at a community programme in The Hague. He said:
"India’s aspirations are no longer limited to its borders. We want to host the Olympics and become a global manufacturing hub."
He also highlighted India’s transformation, noting that the country now has 125+ unicorns compared to just 4 in 2014.
May 17: Defence Action Plan & OCI Extension [Today’s Update]
9On May 17, PM Modi held restricted-level talks with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten. Both leaders agreed to prepare an Action Plan for the Defence Industry at the earliest. They also discussed collaboration in space travel, maritime systems, and maritime security. This is the strongest military dimension of the new Strategic Partnership.
Another key announcement was the extension of OCI Card eligibility for the Surinamese Hindustani community from the fourth generation to the sixth generation. PM Modi posted on X: "The Indian diaspora is a living bridge of the India-Netherlands partnership. Our OCI decision has been enthusiastically received by the diaspora in the Netherlands!" Over 200,000 Surinamese Hindustani people live in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands is India’s 3rd largest trade partner in Europe, with bilateral trade reaching $27.8 billion in 2024-25. It is also India’s 4th largest FDI source, with cumulative investments of $55.6 billion.
