Park Circus heated up: Clash with police over Tiljala bulldozer protest |
Sanchita chatterjee,Kolkata | May 17, 2026 — Kolkata faced its first major law and order challenge since the formation of the BJP government in West Bengal. On Sunday afternoon, a gathering protesting the bulldozer operation at Tiljala at Park Circus Seven Point Crossing turned violent.
According to police sources, a fire broke out in a factory in Tiljala on May 13, killing two people. After that, the state government brought in bulldozers to demolish illegal constructions. Hundreds of local residents gathered in the Muslim-dominated area of Park Circus this afternoon to protest the operation.
How the clash started
The protesters blocked the road at Seven Point Crossing and sat down. When the police tried to disperse the gathering, a section of people started pelting stones at the police.
3 Kolkata Police personnel injured
Several vehicles parked on the roadside were vandalized, including a CRPF bus
Police were forced to resort to lathicharge to control the situation
Shadow of prayer-controversy
A section of the protesters alleged that the new government has imposed restrictions on prayers and azan on the streets. They claim that this is curtailing the religious rights of minorities. This issue, combined with anger over the bulldozer operation in Tiljala, has further increased tension.
On Friday, there was a scuffle with the police over prayers on the streets in Rajabazar area.
Administration's action
Soon after the incident, central forces have been deployed in the Park Circus area along with Kolkata Police. Efforts are being made to bring the situation under control by conducting route marches and patrolling.
Additional Commissioner of Kolkata Police Ashesh Biswas said, "It was an illegal gathering. The police tried to handle the situation professionally. Some have been arrested, the rest are also being identified."
Why this incident is important
1. Political changes: BJP came to power in West Bengal after 15 years, defeating TMC. Like other BJP-ruled states, Kolkata also witnessed its first clashes due to the bulldozer policy.
Location sensitivity: Park Circus is one of the busiest traffic junctions in Kolkata. Tensions here mean disruption of traffic throughout the city.
What's the situation now?
While the situation is under control for now, there is tension in the area. Police said that surveillance has been increased to prevent rumours spreading on social media.
