BhatparaMunicipality Collapses: 29 Councillors Including Chairman Resign En Masse, TMC Stronghold Shaken in Barrackpore
After Kanchrapara and Halisahar, it's now Bhatpara. The wave of mass resignations in TMC-run municipalities in the Barrackpore industrial belt just got stronger. On Thursday, 29 councillors, including the Chairman, resigned en masse from Bhatpara Municipality. Out of 35 wards, 2 councillors had passed away. With 29 out of the remaining 33 quitting, the board has effectively collapsed. The incident has created massive political turmoil in North 24 Parganas.
Why the Mass Resignation?
Discontent had been brewing in Bhatpara Municipality for months. Sources point to three main reasons:
Administrative Vacuum: The Chairman had been absent for a long time, stalling civic work.
Infighting: Two factions within TMC were locked in a bitter power struggle.
Public Anger: Poor civic services - bad roads, water, street lights - led to public anger that councillors had to face daily.
For the last few days, disgruntled councillors were holding secret meetings. The anger exploded on Thursday. As soon as news spread that 29 councillors had submitted resignations together, the municipality came to a standstill.
The Arjun Singh Factor
Bhatpara was once synonymous with 'bahubali' leader Arjun Singh's dominance. He himself was the Municipal Chairman. In the 2026 Assembly elections, his son Pawan Singh was elected MLA from Bhatpara. Since then, a tug-of-war for control over the municipality began. Arjun Singh is now with BJP. So his loyalist councillors were uncomfortable in a TMC board. Political circles believe the 'Arjun factor' played a major role behind this mass resignation.
Domino Effect in Barrackpore
Kanchrapara, Halisahar, and now Bhatpara - three back-to-back municipality collapses have shaken TMC's base in the Barrackpore industrial belt. After BJP formed the state government on May 9, cracks started appearing in TMC's strongholds here. Now speculation is rife about Garulia Municipality too. Sources say multiple councillors there may resign on Friday.
Administrative Crisis
With 29 councillors gone, Bhatpara Municipality is now in a minority. As per municipal law, the board may be dissolved and an administrator appointed by the state government. All civic services, tenders, and development work face uncertainty. With monsoon ahead, citizens are worried about drainage and road repairs.
BJP Reacts
BJP leaders in Barrackpore said, "People are rejecting TMC's corruption. That's why councillors are leaving. BJP will form the board in Bhatpara very soon." TMC district leadership countered, "This is BJP's pressure politics and poaching. We will handle the situation."
In the 2026 Assembly polls, BJP won 6 out of 7 seats in the Barrackpore Lok Sabha area. If municipalities also slip away, it's a huge blow for TMC. The Bhatpara mass resignation is not just about one civic body - it signals a power shift in the entire Barrackpore industrial belt.
