A court in Madurai has sentenced nine policemen to death or life imprisonment for the 2020 lynching of a father and son in police custody during the lockdown in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu.

 



 Reported by Sanchita chatterjee: A court in  has sentenced nine policemen to death or life imprisonment for the 2020 lynching of a father and son in police custody during the lockdown in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu. 

P Jayaraj (58) and his son J Benix (38).

Charges: They were arrested for violating lockdown rules by keeping their shops open.

Torture: They were subjected to unspeakable torture in police custody at Sathankulam police station, leading to their deaths.

Trial: Judge G Muthukumaran of the First Additional District Court in Madurai pronounced the verdict and termed the incident as "abuse of police power".

 Convicted policemen: Inspector S Sridhar, Sub-Inspector P Raghu Ganesh and K Balakrishnan, Head Constables S Murugan and A Sami Durai and Constables M Muthuraja, S Vel Muthu, S Chelladurai and X Thomas Francis.

Compensation: The court has ordered a compensation of Rs 1.5 crore to the affected family. 

This verdict is considered a historic verdict against torture in police custody in India.
