Charges: They were arrested for violating lockdown rules by keeping their shops open. Torture: They were subjected to unspeakable torture in police custody at Sathankulam police station, leading to their deaths. Trial: Judge G Muthukumaran of the First Additional District Court in Madurai pronounced the verdict and termed the incident as "abuse of police power".  Convicted policemen: Inspector S Sridhar, Sub-Inspector P Raghu Ganesh and K Balakrishnan, Head Constables S Murugan and A Sami Durai and Constables M Muthuraja, S Vel Muthu, S Chelladurai and X Thomas Francis.
